Student Films Grab Hat Trick of Top Awards at Edinburgh Film Festival

NFTS bag 3 out of 4 Short Film Awards + grads involved in the Best Feature Film

NFTS graduates swept up awards at the Edinburgh International Film Festival – one of the world’s leading and oldest film festivals.

Two of the three Virgin Atlantic Short Film awards were bagged by NFTS student films.

NFTS film Slap, directed by Nick Rowland, produced by Michelangelo Fano& co-written by Islay Bell Webb has scooped the Virgin Atlantic Little Red Award for Best Short Film. This award affirms EIFF’s long-standing support of directors of short films and is intended both to recognise the outstanding achievements possible within the short format and to offer encouragement for the feature filmmakers of the future.

NFTS animated film The Bigger Picture, directed by Daisy Jacobs, co-written by Jennifer Majka& produced by Chris Hees has won the Award for Creative Innovation in a Short Film. This award specifically recognises imaginative and innovative work in the short film form.

Another NFTS animated film My Stuffed Granny, directed by Effie Pappa& produced by Miranda Ballesteros has won the McLaren Award for Best New British Animation. First given in 1990, this award provides a focus for new British short animation and recognises the spirit of creativity. The award is named in honour of Norman McLaren, the renowned Scottish-born animator.

And 5 NFTS graduates were also involved in the film Hide and Seek, which won the EIFF top prize for Best Feature Film– the Michael Powell Award, named in homage to one of Britain’s most original filmmakers and inaugurated in 1990.
