"Ana Ribiero's 'Pixel Rift Game' is Truly Special"

NFTS Games student Ana Ribiero quit her job in Brazil and sold her car to come to London to fulfil her dream to design games. Now in her second year at the NFTS, her graduation project Pixel Rift (@Pixelriftgame   ) is already proving a big hit.

The game uses the innovative Occulus Rift headset that immerses the game player in a 3D world. The different Game levels in Ana’s game Pixel Rift offer glimpses of life through the eyes of a young girl growing up, trying to indulge her gaming passion across a range of consoles — from 1972’s Magnavox Odyssey to the Nintendo 64 of the late ’90s — despite authority figures and everyday life getting in the way.

At the recent EGX gaming show in London, there was an audible buzz around her game when it was played by the public and games reviewers alike. Although she has only completed three out of the five planned game levels, Pixel Rift has made a stunning impression.

As one reviewer says in the Venture Beat games site says: “Pixel Rift is a stunning demonstration of the possibilities offered by VR. It’s a playful journey through video game history that meshes virtual and augmented realities together to create something truly special.”

“It took about 15 minutes and made more of an impression on me than all the other triple-A and indie titles on offer. I wasn’t alone — everyone I spoke to who attended Ribeiro’s small stand in a quiet upstairs corner of the show was blown away by the game.

“The climax of the demo sees your (virtual) real life and the 2D game merge before your eyes in an explosion of pixels and spitballs that feels like a dream.”

Ana’s game Pixel Rift is now featured on the games distribution site Steam Greenlight awaiting the thumbs up from the public. If she gets enough public support, this will pave the way for Ribeiro to sell the game on Valve’s online store, one of the largest digital marketplaces in the world.

It’s also on show at the Brazil Game Show, with a potential opportunity to sell digitally in Brazil and worldwide through another sales network.

NFTS Games Design and Development students and their Games will be at GameCity (GameCity.org), Nottingham from October 27 – 31st. Come and meet the students, see their games and ask questions about the games course.

We are still interviewing for places on this course, so you can APPLY FOR THE NFTS GAMES MA COURSE HERE
