A critically-acclaimed BBC3 film, Murdered By My Boyfriend, written by NFTS Screenwriting graduate Regina Moriarty, was last night broadcast on BBC One after becoming a runaway hit with audiences when shown on BBC Three last month.
The drama – based on a true story about a young woman who falls in love with a man who eventually takes her life – scored an outstanding 3.5m viewing figure (Live +7) on BBC Three and reached a new audience when repeated on July 20th on the BBC’s flagship channel BBC One.
Murdered By My Boyfriend was penned by Regina Moriarty (pictured left) just two years after graduating from the NFTS and tells the hard-hitting fatal story of a 17-year-old girl caught up in domestic abuse. The hour-long film features outstanding performances from Georgina Campbell as the young victim Ashley and Royce Pierreson, who plays Ashley’s abusive boyfriend, Reece.
Sam Bickley, Channel Editor, BBC Three says: “Murdered By My Boyfriend is truly one of the most powerful, distinctive and original pieces of television I have seen and I am so proud that BBC Three commissioned it, championed and promoted it. If it has helped even one victim of domestic abuse to change their life, then we’ve done our job.”
The show is reported to have had an impact on individual viewers and the BBC has been inundated with requests from charities and organisations wanting to use the film as a resource for training and educating people about these issues.
